Mitch Meyers Preview for the 16th NW Nationals

The season in TAD is getting hot, and so is the temperature. Mitch Meyers and the Epha A/Fuel Dragster team are hoping they start on a hot streak as well. And why not at the race where you are defending champion at? This weekend's event, here at Pacific Raceway is one that Mitch hopes home field advantage will play into his hands. When the team won here last year, they did not have the car they do now. In fact, there are very few similarities to last season for the team. An all new body style, and a different outlook on the tune-up for this year's Dragster. At the earlier Divisional event here at Pacific Raceway in June, the race was Mitch's to lose, and he found a way to lose it after being the quickest car in elimination's. A red light ended his chance in the semis, against Mark Hentges, after having the baddest hot rod in round one by almost a tenth of a second. He felt he should have won that event following his win the week before at Woodburn, which would have put him in the lead in the division.
He won't forget the red light, and he will remember the tune-up that gave him the low et for the weekend. If the weather stays in the 70's or low 80's, like it is supposed to, he feels the A/Fuel cars have to the edge. He is banking on the edge to go to the team, with the home field advantage.

Rick Distefano Preview for the AC Delco Canadian Nationals

IHRA Canadian Nationals at Toronto Motorsport Park

When Rick Distefano competed at Edmonton's inaugural Rocky Mountain Nationals, he knew he had a fast car. He just did not know if the team was ready to put 7 or 8 runs together back to back. Well, he did that and more, going all the way to the final round before losing in a great final, to one of THE hitters in the class, Quain Stott. Along the way he defeated a couple of Canadians and then Quain's brother Mitch in the semi finals, for his biggest win ever.
The event coming up this weekend at Toronto Motorsport Park comes with a few more questions for the Calgary based team, namely, the new overdrive rules. The wisdom of the IHRA rules maker's to drop the overdrive for the blown cars in mid season, is a very sore spot for all the cars running a blower, and not having a chance to race the car with the new rules does not sit well with Rick, particularly when the other cars had a chance to compete two weeks ago at Milan. But with fuel guru Les Davenport totally redoing the fuel system to match the new OD, Rick is confident that the team will be around in the late rounds Sunday to compete against the East Coast contingent. He will certainly be lone hope for the West Coast teams, unlike the race at Edmonton where the West Coast guys out numbered the East by a 3 to 1 margin. This weekend's event will be more like a 25 to 1 deficit. He likes those odds! Rick is planning on running two or three more IHRA event later in the year as well as one or two AMS events if he can get entry to them.
Rick would like to thank all his sponsors including Shaganappi Chevrolet, Jet Tools and Equipment Canada, Top Gun Coatings, Rolling Mix Concrete and the team that supplied the award winning paint T & S Custom Paint.

Latest update on Gary Stroud and wife Stacey 7:00pm July 17, 2003

At about 7:00pm EST, Don Stroud called to let me know that Gary's condition is Grave. The next several days will be needed by the doctors to get a proper picture of his condition and prognosis. His skull has been opened and a tube inserted to relieve the spinal fluid pressure on his brain and there are fractures in his pelvis, and ligament damage to his legs....all inoperable. Don and his family are staying at the Hospital and nearby hotels. He is well aware of the power of prayer and seeks yours. He has asked me to thank you all for your kindness, prayers and emotional support.
Gary will remain medically paralyzed. He is in a coma. Bobby Bennett and his photographer Rodger Richards called today to make preparations to establish a Fund to help Gary defray the tremendous costs he and his family will necessarily endure while they are at his bedside. I will be preparing the necessary paperwork to establish a trust account with our law firms bank and will make sure that any funds received will be given to the benefit of Gary and his family. Details will follow.

July 17, 2003 Very sad release, here on Pro Modiified .Com web master and Pro Mod afficionado Gary Stroud.

Moments ago Don Stroud called and though the facts are still sketchy, Gary Stroud, wife Stacey and others were traveling to Pennsylvania for an NMCA race in Pittsburgh, when they were involved in a head on accident with a big rig, somewhere in Alabama. Don reported that Gary is on life support with a head injury at UAB hospital and that Stacey was also hospitalized with unknown injuries. The accident happened sometime late last night. Family members are rushing to the hospital as I type this message and I have been assured that as soon as more information is available I will be told. Gary was to visit with our family this weekend and our family is devastated by this awful news.
I would ask that all who believe, become prayer partners and summon Jesus' to send angels to the hospital to comfort and look after the family. We pray that the hands of those who care for them be blessed with His healing power. I will keep you all informed as news continues to become available. God bless you all. Very sad news indeed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Gary.

Nitro Dragsters Highlight NHRA National Open at Mission

Mission, B.C., July 15, 2003 - It's become a mid-summer tradition at Mission Raceway
Park, and the NHRA National Open Presented by Lucas Oil Products of Canada this
weekend will have something for every taste in drag racing.
Heading up the program is the return of the Nostalgia Top Fuel Dragsters, nitro-powered monsters with their supercharged Hemi engines in front of the driver, just like they used to be in the "old days." These modern versions are capable of speeds of 250 mph in less than six seconds. Scott Mason will take on one of the veterans of the class, Jack Harris, who ran at this event last year. Both call Utah home.
Western Canada is a hotbed for the Alcohol-fueled dragsters and funny cars, and over a dozen of B.C. and Alberta's fastest cars will be on hand in a unique racing format that will see the quickest of each type of car face off for all the prize money and a coveted NHRA "Wally" trophy on Sunday afternoon.
The nitro fuel won't be confined to the dragsters, as local heroes Ron Houniet and Brian Hall will match race their unbelievable six-second, 200-mph Harley-Davidson motorcycles down the Mission quarter mile.
Also looking for that level of performance, which would be a first in Western Canada, will be the street-legal Pro Street cars. Will Don Murray have to deal with the debut of nemesis Glen Braid's all-new car? Will Brian Lane from the U.S. trump them both and smash the performance barriers first?
And for a real show, Darryl Webb, the "burnout king" from Edmonton, brings his Lucas Oil Corvette Funny Car to Mission to lay down some quarter-mile smokers that should keep the local mosquitoes in check!
For the hardcore fans of the local Mission racers, all the regular NHRA classes will be running for trophies as well, including those wheelstanding Super Stock muscle cars and the wickedly fast Top Comp dragsters.
It'll be an action-packed weekend, with something for every racing fan. Gates open Saturday and Sunday, at 8:00 am. The Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars
have qualifying sessions at noon and 4:00 pm Saturday, and their first round of
eliminations goes Sunday at noon along with all the other feature attractions.
Admission on either Saturday or Sunday is $20.00, including pit pass.
Mission Raceway Park is located on Highway 11 between the Mission Bridge and the Lougheed Highway.

July 14, 2003 Mitch Meyers Wrap-up.

Well the old saying goes, "If you get greedy, it can come back and bite you in the butt". And that is exactly what happened to team "Epha" in the first round of eliminations at Woodburn Dragstrip this past weekend. Mitch and team qualified solidly in the #4 position, with a 5.54, that left alot on the table come eliminations. With the cooler temperatures on Sunday, the team felt that they could run in the 5.40's or possibly even quicker, and they went for it. Unfortunately, it bit them right where it hurts, and they blazed the tires at the 60ft. mark, ending their day. Mitch knew that they were taking a bit of a chance, especially since their barrel valve had been acting up a bit, but if the car stuck they would have had a great pass and they wanted the chance for lane choice in the next round if they were to get by round one. With the competition at Woodburn this weekend, he knew there was no easy rounds, and Joey Severance (who went on to the final) is a great driver so the team was looking for a run they felt was needing. In hindsight, the track was maybe not quite as tight as they thought, although they did not use that as an excuse, "we just plain ole got too greedy" explained Mitch. "We'll use it as another learning curve, and go on to the next race and try to defend our title", talking about the NW Nationals at Seattle in two weeks, the race they won last year. Mitch would like to congratulate Greg Lawrence and his whole team for their win against Joey Severance in the final round at Woodburn.

July 11, 2003 Mitch Meyers Preview Form Woodburn's Lucas Oil Event.

WOODBURN, Ore. -- Mitch Meyers and the “Epha” A/ Fuel TAD Dragster goes into this weekend’s Lucas Oil Event as the defending champion, of sorts. He won the last Lucas Oil Event there, but it was only five weeks ago. Woodburn Dragstrip is lucky enough to get two events this season as well as Mission Raceway (who gets their second event the end of August). The race this weekend is the annual “Les Schwab Tires Event” that Woodburn has hosted for over a decade. The last few events here have been dominated by A/Fuel cars (they have won four out of the last five here including Mitch’s June win), and at this weekend’s race it is a good bet that Mitch will be there in the late rounds. It is his home track and it is where he has been the most consistent. With anticipated mid 70’s to low 80 degree temperatures, Mitch feels he has the tune-up to run in the 5.40’s to 5.50’s. But if the weather is a little cooler, the “Epha” team has a 5.30 tune-up that the blown cars will be hard pressed to match. With the addition of Morgan Lucas competing this weekend, his biggest threat will possibly come from the “Darien/Meadows” tuned Lucas driven A/Fuel dragster. A lot of Mitch’s success is due to Jerry Darien and he is quick to thank and give credit to Jerry for all his assistance in turning their team into a threat at any event. The philosophy of the Meyer’s team is “simple is better”, and they have found a tune-up that seems to like a wide range of conditions. To that end, the team goes into this weekend’s event, with the confidence they need, and the hope to pick up valuable points and get revenge on current Division 6 leader Mark Hentges (Mitch is still smarting from his semi final red light defeat to Hentges). Check out all the results this weekend at Drag Race Central and www.speedzonemagazine.com

July 8, 2003 Iseli, Barling and Harden update:

After a thrash of some nine days, the old girl was finally rolled out into the sun today (Sunday) for a photo opportunity. Murray Iseli and our good bud Ken Kennedy were on hand for today's work party, while yours truly took a break and worked the camera and a six-pack instead! The car should be ready to fire on Thursday evening, if things continue to go as well as they have to this point.

Testing should follow as scheduled this Friday at MRP.

Let the games begin!

July 3, 2003

For immediate release: Courtesy Pat Harden

The White Rock-based Top Comp team of Iseli, Barling & Harden is pleased to
announce the return to competition of their blown alcohol slingshot. The
car has been fully updated to current Advanced ET specs, and is now legal
all the way down to 6.00 seconds. While the little supercharged mouse motor
is not capable of pushing the car that quick, high 6.90s are theoretically
possible once the new fuel system has been shaken down.

Owner/driver Brian Barling would like to offer considerable thanks and
appreciation to Rod Illingworth up in Cache Creek for volunteering his time
and effort in updating the chassis, which turned out to be quite a long and
labour-intensive process.

Plans are to test at Mission on Friday, July 11, and hopefully get Brian's
license upgraded that same day. If all goes well, a competition debut is
set for the following weekend's National Open at MRP.

The team itself will remain intact from previous seasons: Brian & Katie Barling,
Pat Harden, and his wife Kim White. Murray Iseli remains as the "silent partner",
but expect a sighting or two this year!

There is just one small dilemma - the car has always been known as a '69
Gilmore; however, the recent backhalving of the chassis has resulted in
probably less than 3' of original Gilmore tubing remaining due to an earlier
front half. That and the front axle are about all that's left. Therefore,
the car will likely be entered in future events as an '03 Illingworth.

In any event, we're thrilled to finally be getting back out there. See you
at the races!
