Eagle Motorplex 2008 preview.

West Coast Pro Mod 2008 season preview.

The 2008 season for the West Coast Pro Mod association looks to be a series that is going to be 'Nitrous' strong. WCPM's is an association that seems goes through car (and engine type) changes every couple years. The last couple seasons, the blower cars have been more prevalent, with guys like Joe Delehay, Trevor Lowe and Glen Kerunsky dominating. Prior to that, Dennis Radford and Pat Stoken in the nitrous variety were the dominant players. This year it looks like the Nitrous cars are going to make up the majority of the fields. A number of the long standing teams that have fielded nitrous cars moved up big time with new cars and new power. Vern Mills has a new 55 Chevy, his favorite car model and major power from Custom Balance. Ross Hogenson took delivery of a new 63 Corvette, after his dreadful crash at the '07 Rocky Mountain Nationals. The Vogt brother also have a new car, also a 63 Corvette, and early testing at Vegas went very well. Rod Pearce took delivery of his new 63 Corvette last year, and has a year of testing under his belt. Don Snavely is in his second year with his 07 Corvette, and he will be behind the wheel of that awesome ride later this season. Wayne Hofer is back in the series and will drive his trusty Acadian (Nova), until his new 63 Corvette is ready to go. Tom Meheden has new power, a Fulton 712 cu in monster. Perry Thyr has got more power (706 Fulton) as well, and will be back full time this season. Dennis Radford and Billy Harper will run a couple events (Denver and Boise) and will be major threats at both, as they are two of the top nitrous teams in the country, with Harper shattering the record books at ADRL events already this season.

For the blown contingent in 2008, Tom Johanns plans to run the whole series, and he has a couple new BAE bullets at his disposal. Joe Delehay will likely not defend his title, as he has cut back his schedule due to work commitments, and will make it out to select events in 2008. Trevor Lowe is taking the year of and will return in 09 with the teams trusty 57 Chevy. Rick Di Stefano will be back out in 08 with the 53 Corvette and new blown power, and will race a few WCPM events. BJ Verkler in his unique 1954 blown sedan will be at two or three events in 2008. Bryon Mackey and the team's 41 Willys will try and make it out to a couple races this season. Dave Jackson will run one or two events this year as well. When the teams head west to Mission, a couple local team will surely come out and play including Keith Korecki (nitrous) Glen May (blown) and Jay Syvertsen (blown). That race has gone back to an 8 car field for 2008. The Mission race is two weeks after this weekend's Salt Lake race and then the teams get a month and a half off before they head to Boise for the hugely popular Nightfire Nationals. That event will see a huge car count and no doubt a record setting track bump spot. The week after the nightfires, the series heads to Bandimere Speedway for the first time ever. That event will showcase many of the local cars in the area as well as the full time WCPM teams who are very excited to compete at the mile high track. The series then heads to Billings for the season finale and a hope for better weather than the canceled season opener
Who will be the major players in 2008? My guess is Tim/Dan Vogt, Ross Hogenson, Vern Mills, Tom Meheden and Tom Johanns will be the top five at the end of the year.
The entry list for this weekends event at Salt Lake one of the most popular event on the schedule is below:
Vern Mills
Tom Meheden
Wayne Hofer
Tim & Dan Vogt
Ross Hogenson
Perry Thyr
B.J. Verkler
Tom Johanns
The season schedule is as follows:
June 14 Rocky Mountain Raceway, Salt Lake City, Utah
One day Evening & night race in front a huge crowd

June 27-29 Mission Raceway Park, Mission, BC
(Friday June 27 is an open test for Pro Mods)
Weekend before Rocky Mountain Nationals.

August 8 - 10 Firebird Raceway
Nightfire Nationals, Boise, Idaho
(Perhaps the largest independent drag race in the West)

August 16 - 17 Inaugural WCPM event
Bandimere Speedway, Denver, Colorado

August 30-31 Yellowstone Dragstrip, Billings, Montana
Season Finale
The event this weekend at Salt Lake is a one-day affair with the winner and runner-up going six rounds (including qualifying) in one day. It is a battle of the fittest for sure. For Hotel info and run times go to the Salt Lake race page at the association web site, www.westcoastpromods.com

Bellemeur Joins SynOil TA/FC Team

The Edmonton, Alberta based SynOil Racing Top Alcohol Funny Car team led by owner Geoff Goodwin along with crew chiefs Wally and Ryan Protz has tapped Sean Bellemeur to drive their 2007 SynOil Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The SynOil team will make their debut with their new driver this weekend at the 20th annual Fathers Day Funny Car Classic at Race City in Calgary.
Bellemeur, 26, from Tustin, CA has been idle for most of the season and is excited to be back behind the wheel. "To say I missed driving is the ultimate understatement. I was like a caged animal. I'm very happy and feel very fortunate to be involved with a team with the caliber of guys like Geoff and the father/son tag team of Wally and Ryan Protz. Not to mention the major sponsor from SynOil and support from its President John Edwards. I can't wait to get started" said Sean.
The decision to add the youthful Bellemeur to the team is a result of the team's new direction and enthusiasm with co-crew chief Ryan Protz being one of the youngest crew chiefs in Top Alcohol competition. "When I first met with Sean, I could see right away that his enthusiasm and drive to win is right up there with mine. Our communication has been great and I think we will have a very lethal combination out on the race track" Ryan stated.
Following this weekend's race in Calgary the SynOil team will head to Seattle for the NHRA Division 6 race in Seattle. The entire team is excited to hit the race track, and race fans are invited to meet the team, their new driver, and learn more about SynOil Racing.
SynOil Fluids is a supplier and distributor of base commodity fluid products to the Western Canadian Oilfield. These commodities include hydrocarbon fracturing with tight gas and conventional oil and gas applications. For more information please visit www.synoil.ca

April 23, 2008

Opening day is almost upon us, and the ERA gang and friends have been working extremely hard to get the track ready. Our commitment to keeping this track a racers and family track is showing with the excitement and anticipation of the arrival of April 26th.
There are a lot of changes at Eagle this year, from schedule and rule changes, to a few new classes, new concession personal, some new equipment and general improvements and upgrades around the facility.
RJ Enterprises VP Fuels will be back at all races with a fuel depot at the track.
We have new people looking after the concession stand and are promising some outstanding meals from omelettes and pancakes for breakfast to steak sandwiches for dinner. They are going to try and talk you into leaving the cooking to them.
This year with the addition of The Blown Alky Series sponsored by RJ Enterprises VP Fuels and The Outlaw Door slammers sponsored by Cutting Edge Performance, should make racing and spectating at Eagle Motorplex very exciting at Eagle. Both series will be qualifying on Saturday with 3 passes and eliminations on Sunday. These are grass roots classes and must run quicker than 7.99 for The Blown Alky Series and 8.99 and quicker for the Outlaw Door slammers. The reaction from racers wanting to run this class is fabulous. We will be having cars from Alberta, B.C. and Washington running in these series. With the addition of these 2 classes, our program at Eagle should be well rounded and not intrusive to our main goal of being a bracket racers track. We have also added for the first time this year a hot rod class for people that generally run only at the nostalgia races to further enhance our bracket racer program.
The C.M.D.R.A. is back again with their season opener on our May long weekend. They are really excited about this year with some really quick mid 6 second times coming from their Top Fuel Class.
We will be running a "Pinks" style race again this year following our May 10th race. Back by popular demand, Ken Orser has consented to do the arm drop start again; he has only one request, no 37 ½ length handicap starts. We are going to change the format a little and will be choosing the 16 participants closest together in times from our Pro, Super Pro, Sportsman and Sports Compact classes. We will than run a single race with the winner to move on until the final round which will be a best of three. Each round will have negotiations for 1 minute via live microphone and then run. The cost to get in will be $15.00 and the final winner will take all.
A first for Eagle this year will be Wayne and Tami's wedding which will take place at the track Friday evening August 15th with the reception to follow at the Cache Creek hall. The wedding is open to everyone.
Another first this year is The Lucas Oil Nostalgia Race which will take place July 19th-20th. We have opened it up to all cars 1980 and older and running classes much like The Langley Loafers Old Time Drags. There is going to be a special dinner prepared at a minimal fee and the first ever outdoor concert which is included in your pit pass. We are going to have The March Hare Show band live at the track playing some good old rock and roll music for us. Check out their website and email us with some songs you would like to hear.
This year will be the 21st Annual Langley Loafers Race at Eagle. The excitement just keeps on coming, as the Nostalgia Funny Cars will be here for the first time ever. This will be a points race for them and will be here with a full complement of cars as well the Canada West Door Slammers will be back to provide some outstanding entertainment. Due to the popular demand on this race, spectator parking will be restricted to outside the gate. There will be free overnight camping to all people that wish to attend this event that are not racing in the spectator parking area.
August 16th and 17th will be the 6th Annual Zimmer Wheaton Thunder in the Desert weekend, featuring the Blown Alcohol Cars, the Outlaw Door Slammers along with some special guests that will get announced at a later date for the Saturday night race. There will be again double the Payout for the night race.
July 12th-13th weekend will feature The Aurora Electronics 12th Annual night race and again will be Christmas in July with prizes for the best decorated pit spots. There will be 1 ½ times the payouts again this year and Wally's for all classes. This year entertainment will be provided by the exciting Canada West Door Slammer Association and the wheel standing B.C. Super Shifters Association.
There will be 2 jacket races again this year with Lucas Oil sponsoring the April 26th spring race and TCS Performance Products sponsoring the fall September 13th race.
Please give some thought as to whether you can make the trip to Boise Idaho for the NHRA ET Finals on the September long weekend. We will have to get started on fundraising very early this year to help cover some of the expenses for the trip down there. Last year we had just about a full team and did a great job at Woodburn and will be hard to match this year because of the location.

We look forward to another great year at Eagle

“One for the Ages” at San Antonio Raceway

Top Fuel Icons Chris Karamesines and Fred Farndon, with a combined 110 years of racing experience, to square off Friday, April 4 at Amalie Oil Texas Nationals

Chris Karamesines and Fred Farndon have seen everything there is to see when it comes to Top Fuel racing. In fact, they have been through every technological advance the class has ever gone through. They have been there from the beginning and continue to drive in the class, getting behind the wheel of the most powerful vehicles in competitive motor sports.

They have taken much different paths during their Top Fuel careers, but it will all come full-circle Friday at the Amalie Oil Texas Nationals when the two legends will go head-to-head during the evening qualifying session.

Farndon, born in Toronto Sept. 4, 1938, has been driving a Nitro car since the late 1950’s. Karamesines, who broke the 200 mph barrier at Alton Dragway on April 4, 1960, will turn 80 years old this season. The Chicago-based driver is a member of the Professional Motorsports Hall of Fame.

During their careers Karamesines and Farndon have squared off against pretty much every driver to ever drive a Top Fueler professionally. From the old-timers like Tommy Ivo to the new guns like Clay Millican and Bruce Litton, Karamesines and Farndon have toed the starting line with them all, with one exception…the two have never faced each other on the track. That will change April 4 at San Antonio Raceway when the pair will go toe-to-toe in the evening qualifying session of the Amalie Oil Texas Nationals.

“I’m looking forward to it, it should be a lot of fun,” Farndon said of taking on the ‘Golden Greek,’ “Of course I would rather race him in the finals so we’ll just see how things shake out.”

“I’m excited about racing him…then again I love racing against anybody,” Karamesines said. “I just love to race. Racing is what keeps me going. When you go to the track and get to spend time with people like Bobby Lagana and the rest of the drivers in the Top Fuel class it, there’s nothing better than that.”

Farndon worked as a lifeguard, pinsetter at a bowling alley and stock boy at a local grocery story to save enough money to buy his first race car in the early 1950’s. He has been going at it ever since. Though there are some distinct changes since the day he made his first pass in Cayuga, one thing remains the same.

“The advances in safety are the biggest difference between when I started racing and now,” he said. “Back then there really weren’t any rules and you did whatever it took to go fast. Now, with the manufacturers working with the racers to improve the equipment as far as safety is concerned, things are much, much safer. But the main goal still is to have fun and go as fast as you can.”

“Back then no one told you what you could or couldn’t do,” Karamesines added. “Now we’re all much more informed as to what’s safe and what isn’t. We still want to go fast…that’s what it’s all about.”

One thing is for certain, Friday night when they go up against each other in San Antonio it will be a truly historic moment in drag racing.

“I can’t wait to see this,” IHRA president Aaron Polburn said. “We’ll be looking at over 110 years of drag racing experience going down the track. It will be an unparalleled moment in all my years as a fan of drag racing, one of those moments you will always remember.”

The Amalie Oil Texas Nationals are scheduled April 4-6 at San Antonio Raceway. Professional qualifying will begin Friday at 7:00 p.m. There will be three professional qualifying sessions Saturday with final eliminations beginning Sunday at 10 a.m. For more information please visit www.sanantonioraceway.com or www.nitrojam.com.

Spiering qualifies at NHRA Gatornationals

Eaton Cutler-Hammer Pro Modified team faces fellow Canadian
in round one of finals in Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA (March 15, 2008) - The Eaton Cutler-Hammer Pro Modified Corvette, driven by Carl Spiering, qualified 14th with a 6.223-second 231.75-mph pass in the JEGS ProMod Challenge Series at this weekend’s 39th annual ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals the famed Florida drag strip.

“The plan was with only two qualifying attempts to play it conservative on the first lap,” explained Spiering after his final qualifying run at Gainesville Raceway in Gainesville. “We beefed things up for our second and final attempt and unfortunately shook the tires, peddled and aborted the run.”

The first day of professional qualifying was cancelled after persistent rain Friday. Sunday's starting field was set on two sessions held on Saturday afternoon.

The Carl Spiering Motorsports newly-constructed Tim McAmis Race Cars-manufactured 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will face fellow Canadian Raymond Commisso from Toronto, Ontario in the first round of the final eliminations.

“We have our work cut out for us in round one racing Raymond Commisso, he’s a tough cookie,” said the 43-year old Spiering from Jordan, Station, Ontario. “It doesn’t get any easier after that when we’ll face Danny Rowe or Tony Pontieri from Toronto.”

“The guys will work on the Eaton Cutler-Hammer Road Warrior tonight and put the final tune-up in the ERD Supercharged Hemi in the morning and give it our best,” added Spiering.

Final eliminations for the field of 16 Pro Modified finalists is set for the 39th annual ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals Sunday in Gainesville, Florida at Gainesville Raceway and will start at 10:30 a.m.

Stivers Qualifies No. 13 on Final Attempt in Gainesville

Gainesville, Fl – Rick Stivers used his final run on Saturday to qualify the Tindle Racing GT 500E Promod Mustang in the No. 13 in the JEGS Promod Challenge at Gainesville Raceway.

Stivers had just two chances to qualify for eliminatons after rain washed out Friday's qualifying rounds. After a tire-shake opening run for 9.064 seconds at 100 mph, which placed him on the DQ list, the Kentucky native was down to a single run to qualify for the 16-car field. Crew chiefs Mike Janis and Mike Janis Jr provided a tune up that put Stivers in the field.

"It wasn't the prettiest pass, but we are in the show," said Stivers. We had a problem about half track and I knew something was wrong when I saw Scott Ray drive by me as if I was standing still. She was on a real good pass."

Stivers will face Kirk Kuhns tomorrow for the first round of eliminations.

Tindle Racing would like to specially thank TEI (Tindle-Enteprises Inc), MSD Ignition, Goodyear Tires, TORCO Racing Fuels, NGK Sparkplugs, Lucas Oil, and Huntsville Engine for their continuing support. For more information on Tindle Racing visit www.TindleRacing.com

DNQ for Tindle in Gainesville, Plans to Test

2007 AMS Promod Challenge Rookie of the Year Tim Tindle failed to qualify in the JEGS Promod Challenge at the ACDelco Gatornationals, Gainesville, FL, after he was forced to abort each run during his attempts.

Rain on Friday forced NHRA officials to cancel all qualifying sessions, leaving teams with only two attempts on Saturday to make the field. After those two sessions were complete, Tim Tindle and the Tindle Enterprises' team sat outside in the No. 19 position.

"We really needed the qualifying session on Friday, which really hurt us," said Tindle. "It puts the pressure on everyone when you only have two attempts."

"We made several changes during the off-season and didn't get to test as much as we needed to, and it shows. But, we will get better. We just need more passes and information. Mike Janis, son Janis Jr., and the entire team have been working around the clock to make it happen and it will. The team and I are planning to stay here in Gainesville and test on Monday. "

Fortunately Tindle's teammate, Rick Stivers, made the field and will be competing in tomorrow's eliminations.

Carl Spiering looking forward to Gainesville

Eaton Cutler-Hammer Pro Modified team preparing for NHRA Gatornationals

JORDAN STATION, ONTARIO (March 13, 2008) – The Pro Modified drag racing team of Carl Spiering Motorsports is planning for a good showing at its first 2008 NHRA event this coming weekend.

“We’re looking forward to Gainesville,” said Spiering, driver of the Eaton Cutler-Hammer sponsored 1963 Corvette. “This will be our first time running at the Gators and we can’t wait. It’s a great track to race on and we want to put on a good show for the fans.”

Spiering and his team will be competing at the ACDelco Gatornationals in northern Florida in the JEGS ProMod Challenge Series.

The Jordan Station, Ontario based team, headed by Spiering and Crew Chief Terry Vince, has spent time testing the newly-constructed Tim McAmis Race Cars-manufactured 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray in Georgia.

“We learned a lot in Valdosta testing, and I’m confident that we’ll be ready for the Gatornationals,” added Spiering. “There were some new car jitters that we worked out and there’s no question the ERD (Engine Research & Development) 526-cubic inch Supercharged Hemi has the power we need.”

“It’s important that I thank Eaton Corporation's electrical business (Canadian Operations) that provide the primary sponsorship of our drag racing team for the seventh consecutive year,” commented the 43-year old Spiering. “I also want to thank our list of associate sponsors and the JEGS ProMod Challenge Series for inviting us to participate in the first tour event.”

The 39th annual ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals will be held in Gainesville, Florida March 14-16 at Gainesville Raceway.

Stawicki and G-Force ready for 2008 PMRA season

Veteran New York team always a strong contender

MEDINA, NEW YORK (March 5, 2008) – Always in the midst of battle, the team of Mike Stawicki and G-Force Race Cars will return to Pro Modified Racing Association action for 2008.

“We’re going to do as many big races as close to home as possible,” said Stawicki from his Western New York base. “We plan on the Cayuga (TMP) races, Grand Bend, and hopefully the New York dates,” when asked about the team’s PMRA plans. “Everything depends on how the season goes.”

Running a state-of-the-art 1967 Camaro-bodied Pro Modified, the Stawicki 521-cubic inch Billet Brad Anderson (BAE) supercharged Hemi in the G-Force entry is always in contention and the team campaigns in both IHRA and NHRA competition. After a fitful start last year, the team rebounded at Rockingham in October with a 5.97-second run, and according to DMPE’s Jon Salemi, there will be more power for 2008.

“We’ve got the M5 supercharger built by DMPE (Darren Meyer Performance Engineering) said Salemi, and we were the first to run in the fives with it.” Salemi also mentioned the team has been working recently in finding more power.

“We spent all winter on Mike’s new engine dyno,” he added. “There’s an increase in power.”

While Stawicki is a 30-year plus veteran drag racer, he has made his mark in the Pro Modified ranks over the past several seasons, and credits this success to his team.

“I have a lot of great people that support me on this team,” mentioned Stawicki, who won the PMRA Challenge at Toronto Motorsports Park in 2005. “Jim Salemi (crew chief) gives me the best ride around. G-Force Race Cars enable us to put the power to the ground and Darren Mayer from DMPE Inc. provides me with great a supercharger. It’s all about team work.”

While the Stawicki car is a rolling test bed for G-Force, the company builds seven to 10 Pro Modifieds per year. Some of its customers include PMRA competitors Carl Spiering, Mike Janis, along with the IHRA-based cars of Ed Hoover and Eddie Ware.

The red Camaro of Stawicki and G-Force will be ready for the PMRA season opener, the Victoria Day Weekend - PMRA Challenge at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga May 17-18.

PMRA tour stops in 2008 include two dates at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario, New York International Raceway Park and Dunn Tire Raceway Park in New York, Sanair in Quebec, and the Southwestern Ontario track of Grand Bend Motorplex.

Negotiations are underway with several US race tracks based in Michigan, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania with the plan of presenting a seven-event PMRA drag racing series this season.

About the Pro Modified Racing Association (PMRA):
The Pro Modified Racing Association, www.ProModifiedRacing.com, was organized late in 2004, started racing operations in 2005, and is entering its fourth year of operation. The PMRA is a self-governing organization with input from its teams, and adheres to the technical and safety rules as outlined by the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) and the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). The series has event venues in Ontario, Quebec, and New York State.

Cars in the PMRA capture the true spirit of hot rodding, and the class is one of drag racing’s most exciting and colorful classes, offering a diverse group of race cars with different types of 2,500-horsepower supercharged, nitrous powered and turbocharged engines.

No Pro Modified team has dominated in the history of PMRA events. In 2005, 2006, and 2007, each event was topped off with a different winner, and 2006 Grand Bend Motorplex winner Joe Boniferro became the first repeat winner in series history, winning the 2007 Grand Bend race.

Combining classic body styles and modern equipment, constructors are permitted, within established rules and parameters, to modify and enhance the cars in both appearance and performance. The cars are fuelled by gasoline or methanol, propelling them down the quarter-mile in low six-second times at over 200 miles per hour. The PMRA provides drag race fans the opportunity to see, hear, and experience the popular Pro Modifieds, known as "the world's fastest door slammers".

New York International Raceway Park to hold inaugural race June 7

LEICESTER, NEW YORK (February 28, 2008) – In its quest to present the best in Pro Modified drag racing, the Pro Modified Racing Association Presented by Torco Racing Fuels Ontario is pleased to announce its inaugural race at New York International Raceway Park in Leicester, New York.

The PMRA Challenge will be held at New York International Raceway Park Saturday, June 7.

“This is a real positive step forward,” said PMRA Director of Operations Bruce Mehlenbacher. “We’re very pleased to be running at a new track, and providing another quality venue for our teams to compete.”

Opened in 1970, New York International Raceway Park is just south of Rochester, and has been known as Motor City Raceway and Dragway 36. It is an IHRA sanctioned facility and was home to the IHRA’s Empire Nationals in 1991.

The new New York International Raceway Park owners Vito and Sylvia Antonicelli said they are excited to be presenting the PMRA Pro Modifieds.

“We have watched the growth of this series,” mentioned Vito, “and the PMRA has developed into a top touring series with great cars and racers. We look forward to presenting them to the Western New York area fans this June.”

Mehlenbacher also mentioned that for several of the PMRA teams, racing at NYIRP will be close at hand.

“For several of our teams, including the Rochester-based team of Joe Caruso and Mike Cusimano, Guenther Racing from Livonia, New York, and new PMRA member Randy Jewell of Holley, New York, this will be racing in their backyard,” said Mehlenbacher. “We have other New York-based teams such as the Grainy Brothers, Mike Stawicki, Joe Lilienthal, and Mark Mitchell who will also appreciate having another event in their home state.”

The New York International Raceway Park race will be the second stop for the 2008 PMRA tour.
