Kenny Lang Motorsports.

Kenny Lang Edmonton Wrap up.
Making too much power is not something every Pro Mod team can complain about in the IHRA. Probably there are four or five teams that have to deal with those types of issues. Kenny Lang and the Al Billes tuned 53 Corvette was a team that suffered through this past weekend's Rocky Mountain Nationals. The good news was, he did not lose any of his advantage in the point standings. And in fact gained since second place competitor Jim Halsey skipped the race.
Kenny qualified second in the field after a last ditch 6.20 Saturday night. In round one he defeated nitrous competitor Lee frank after overcoming a tenth of a second hole-shot disadvantage for Frank. He then faced Thomas Patterson in round two but after tire shake on the starting line and running in the weaker Left lane he was forced to click the car off early. " We flat out could not get a handle on the tricky freshly ground race track. The starting line was great, but the 200 to 400 foot part of the track was tough to get hooked up on. The car wheel stood on every run, and when a track is a bit loose, you have to steer these cars. With the wheels up it is difficult to do that. Luckily we went as far in eliminatons as the guys close to us in the standings and added to our lead against Halsey, so we will go to Grand bend with lots of confidence, but will also be wary enough to know you can go from hero to zero in just one race.
Kenny would like to thank all his crew and tuner/engine builder Billes for all their hard work and all thanks his great sponsors : Castrol, AirLiquide, Hoosier Racing tires, Pepsi, Miller, NGK, The Prolific Group, Inlett Systems Group, Jet Equipment, The Sign Source, Kenny Lang Autobody, and Drag Race Canada

Joey Steckler wins the Pro Nostalgia class with a win over Brent Harris. Steckler gets his biggest win in 7.50 Funny car racing running right on the 7.50 index.

A very tight field in pro nostalgia was the field separated by only .081 of a second. In round one of eliminations Brent Harris, Joey Steckler, Eddy Plaizier and Darrell Webb all advanced to the semi final round. In the semis, Steckler took on Webb and he went a great 7.52 forcing Webb to go under the 7.50 index to a 7.47. Brent Harris won a real close to to buddy Eddy Plaizier, with both having mid .0 lights. Plaizier was out front, and lifted just before the finish line (not wanting to break ot) and Harris went by him to get a .009 stripe. Upon looking at the time slip Plaizier, could have run it out the back door and would not have broke out.

The final to be run on Sunday will see Harris take on Steckler in the final.

Kenny Lang Pro Mod

It has been a pretty good ride in 08 for Canadian Pro Mod Racer Kenny Lang, two wins (Milan and Rockingham) and a 66 point lead in the series standings. But like all serious racers the team is not looking past their next event. And the next event on the series, up this weekend, is basically their home event, at Castrol Raceway, for the "Rocky Mountain Nationals". Yes it is still 900 miles from the home base in Grande Pointe Manitoba, but when you travel the distance the team does in the year, this one is like a walk around the block. They like all the teams in the class know this race is a very important one for a few reasons. #1, It is the best attended race fan wise on the circuit. #2, with this race being in the middle in the season, it is a race where many teams go on a roll and start the home stretch run. #3, the elevation here is very demanding on both types of cars, blown and nitrous and if you can get a handle on your high altitude tune-up it sets you up for the rest of the hot events in the summer.
"It has been a pretty good year so far for sure, and all the credit has to go to my team Rob Poirier, Danny Lang (Dad) and Jason McKnight, who are really the backbone, and having Al Billes in our corner on a full time makes all the difference. Al flat out knows what a blown hemi wants and needs". Lang stated Thursday night in the pits. But there are so many good teams in this series, and we could easily walk away from this weekend's event in second or third place. We are making more power than last season, and we ran a 6.10 up here, so we know we can challenge for possibly our third final of the year. We would love to maintain our place in the standings and maybe even extend out point lead, but Mike Castellana, Pat Stoken, Scotty Cannon, Quain Stott, and a number of others are running real well as well, so have to be ready to fight as hard as we can. We also want to perform well in front of our Canadian fans. The new track surface is going to be tricky this weekend, but it will be the same for all the teams, and the one who can figure it out the quickest will have the advantage, and Lang is confident his team will be near the top of the pack. Ken would like to give special thanks to Bob Hjorleifson, Scooter, Robert Tynski and Jimbo.
Kenny would like to thank the sponsors: Castrol, AirLiquide, Hoosier Racing tires, Pepsi, Miller, NGK, The Prolific Group, Inlett Systems Group, Jet Equipment, The Sign Source, Kenny Lang Autobody, and Drag Race Canada.

Pat Stoken Pro Mod

The Eureka Montana Pro Mod team owned and operated by the Stoken Family has seen the Pro Mod class evolve every year they have been involved in the last decade, but the difference in the last year and a half with the new rules to try and achieve closer parity, are starting to bear the fruits of their labour. The 2007 season was great year for the team, their first full season in the IHRA series netted them third place in the final standings. Most teams would give anything to achieve that type of success in their rookie year running full time. They are not sitting on their laurels. Well the team is not sitting in the top three after four races, they are one of the serious contenders every race. They after switching to the monster 800 cu in Reher-Morrison built engine, along with their proven SpeedTech nitrous fuel system, have the quickest et ever for a nitrous car. Two races ago they raced to an incredible 6.022 237 mph blast. They made two 6.0 runs that weekend and put notice out there, that the rest of the year they will be a team to be reckoned with. With sons Casey and Cory calling he tuning shots and father Pat behind the wheel, the team is looking forward to competing at the closest race to their home base. They ran very well last year at this event gong to the semi finals and then finishing the year, in 3rd place. They currently sit in seventh in the standings, and the biggest issue they have faced is trying to harness all the power they are making. "Getting it to the track is what our biggest challenge is so far this year, stated Pat, but we are close to sorting out the clutch, and this weekend's event at the super smooth Edmonton track will be a real test as the corrected air will be well over 4000 feet. With Brandon Switzer in our corner and my son's working their tail off all I have to do is drive this beast. We are looking forward to it for sure". Pat and the boys and wife Terrie would like to thank Brandon, Awesome Motorsports and SpeedTech for all their help.

Gary Mason Pro Mod

It is year two of being back in the sport of drag racing after a couple decade hiatus for Gary Mason and his sophomore Pro Mod team. Driving a proven 66 Corvette (Ex Mitch Stott) with a blown BAE Hemi, he turned some heads last year, with a second round finish and a career best 6.24 at the Rocky Mountain Nationals. This season, the team has made a dozen or so laps and are just starting to gel as a unit. They have had help from Quain Stott and Les Davenport and are trying to put all the knowledge they have gained from those experts . "We ran 6.24 last week with lots left in the tune-up so we are confident we can match our performance from last season. Crew members Scott Morter, Shawn Bosse and Bob Demers know they have to be on their game as the 18-20 cars are here and all are capable of running well.
Being in their home province this weekend for the Rocky Mountain Nationals at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton puts a little extra pressure on the team, but the pressure they put on themselves is just as strong. You always want to run well, and doing it in front of our friends and family would be extra special.
Gary would like to thank the crew for their hard work and special thanks to Quain Stott Drag Racing and Acceleration Enterprises for their guidance.

Cal Tebb Alcohol Funny Car

Cal Tebb and the RoadHammers Racing team will be busy boys this weekend at Castrol Raceway for the Rocky Mountain Nationals. They are doing double duty in two very tough classes. Cal is going head to head against the best Top Alcohol Funny Car teams in the IHRA with his Firebird Top Alcohol Funny Car, and they are also competing in the Pro Nostalgia (7.50 index) Funny Car class with the team's new 69 Camaro. "Yes, it is going to be busy for sure, stated Cal Friday morning. The 7.50 car is pretty easy run we just have to detune the car to run 7.50 or close to it".
The Top Alcohol Funny Car is a different story. They run a previous Rob Atchison combination, and are still learning what it takes to run at this level. The current best is a 6.1 but with the quality of cars here, they know they need at least a tenth of a second more in order to be close to qualifying for the eight car field.
With four qualifying rounds (two on Friday and two on Saturday), the team will go out and hit the track with a solid baseline Friday, and then hopefully improve each run afterward so they can run Sunday.
Cal is sponsored by and would like to thank Canpo Electric, Boychuk Ventures, Trail Tire, Homestyle Construction, HDF Insurance, The Wild West Saloon, Les Co. Distribution (Lucas Oil) and Bel Engine Services. Cal would like to thank all the crew for their hard work all season long and they include Anne Lamers, Dave Palmer and Norm Kolwich.

Joe Delehay Pro Mod

One race that back-to-back 2006 and 2007 West
Coast Pro Mod Champion Joe Delehay and his PM Motorsports team look
forward to every year is the IHRA Rocky Mountain Nationals in Edmonton,
Alberta, Canada. Just a 3 hour drive from the team's shop in Calgary,
Alberta, Joe and the team have competed in every IHRA Rocky Mountain
Nationals since the conception of the IHRA event. "Edmonton has some of
the best drag racing fans on the IHRA Circuit" says Delehay.

After last weekends WCPMA event in Mission, Delehay and team are full of
confidence after running almost like a bracket car with each pass around
the 6.25 mark at 233 mph in eliminations and winning the event after a
double disqualification gave Delehay the win after the WCPMA Officials
discussed the situation with the IHRA tech department. "The track in
Edmonton always has an exceptional surface for the IHRA event", "We are
expecting to run quicker in Edmonton this weekend than we did last weekend
in Mission" Delehay says.

Delehay will be looking to impress this weekend in Edmonton as he has
qualified for every Rocky Mountain Nationals except for one event, but has
yet to make it past the first round of eliminations. "I feel we have the
perfect combination to qualify in the top half of the field and be
competitive through out eliminations" said Joe.

Qualifying starts on Friday with two rounds and then continues on Saturday
with the final two rounds of qualifying including the IHRA Night of Fire,
and then will begin Eliminations on Sunday.

Huge Advance Sale for Biggest Race in Nitro Jam Schedule

Record-setting ticket sales to provide festive backdrop for CARS RV & Sport & Marine Rocky Mountain Nationals Presented by Torco Racing Fuels

NORWALK, OHIO; June 30, 2008 – The Canadian fans that pack Castrol Raceway in Edmonton for the Rocky Mountain Nationals keep upping the ante. For the third consecutive season the advance ticket sales are off the charts, setting records for duckets sold. The Rocky Mountain Nationals have come to the forefront as the premiere event on the IHRA Knoll Gas Nitro Jam schedule due to a variety of factors…the rabid passion of the fans, the hard work and forward thinking of track operators Rob and Kim Reeves and the commitment IHRA has made to making the Rocky Mountain Nationals something special.

“NHRA has the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis and the rest of their events kind of lead up to that one,” IHRA president Aaron Polburn said. “We have the Rocky Mountain Nationals. While our other national event venues are strong with great fans, there is just a different kind of feeling when you walk into Castrol Raceway on race day. Rob Reeves and his entire team put on a great show but, honestly, you can find the major difference in the stands. Those fans are unbelievable.”

Case and point, Dr. Tom Carter has a memory of Castrol Raceway he will never forget.

“This was a couple of years ago. It was raining really hard and there was no way we were going to race for quite some time,” the Alcohol Funny Car driver from Cuero, Texas said. “I looked up in the stands and there were hundreds, literally hundreds, of fans sitting there having a great time. There was no shot we were going to get any racing in for hours but they were there having a blast. You just don’t find passion for drag racing like that anywhere else.”

Castrol Raceway in Edmonton is the Westernmost and Northernmost facility on the IHRA Nitro Jam national event schedule. It takes a strong commitment from IHRA racers to make the trip but, as defending Torco Pro Nitro Top Fuel World Champion Bruce Litton said, the long haul is quickly forgotten when the energy and enthusiasm of the fans is felt.

“The fans in Edmonton make you feel special,” Litton said. “They are always so appreciative of you coming out to run in front of them. I know it’s a really long drive but you completely forget about it once you get there and spend time with those fans.”

The passionate fans are just one feature of a great race experience in Edmonton. Rob Reeves has provided another bonus for those racers who make the trip, spending over $100,000 to improve what was already one of the top racing surfaces on the IHRA circuit. He did so for one simple reason…to give something back to his racers.

“Realizing how much commitment and dedication to the series it takes for the IHRA stars to make the trip to Edmonton, it’s my job to ensure they are racing on the finest race track possible,” Reeves said. “I probably didn’t need to spend another $100,000 on new asphalt and a complete regrinding of the entire racing surface, but this event is a big deal to Western Canada and to the IHRA series. I’m going to do everything I can to make the trip worthwhile for the IHRA competitors who support the series.”

One of those IHRA competitors who are coming to support the series will be Torco Pro Modified driver Mike Janis. Janis has skipped the Edmonton before and it has cost him. In fact, two times during his IHRA career not attending the Rocky Mountain Nationals has cost Janis the world championship…once in 2004 and once last season.

“It’s going to be a long ride, but we are excited to race in front of all those great Edmonton fans,” Janis’ Crew Chief, Mike Janis Jr. said. “They make the whole trip worth the long drive.”

Top Fuel pilot Terry McMillen won his first career Top Fuel Ironman in Edmonton. He loves everything about the race.

“The fans are unbelievable,” he said. “They really make the place special. I’ve gotten over 200 e-mails over the last couple of weeks from people I’ve met in Edmonton who have taken an interest in my career. They follow what I’m doing all season and really come out to support everyone when we’re there…they will do anything for you. They want to take you out to eat, bring you gifts…all kinds of things.

“When you get to Castrol Raceway they make you feel like one of the family,” McMillen continued. “They’ll do anything for you and are really grateful IHRA comes out to put on such an entertaining program. To legitimately run for a world championship in IHRA you have to go to Edmonton. And once you get there you will have the time of your life.”

IHRA has incentives in place for drivers and teams who make the trip. There is a cash incentive in addition to a free car and driver and four free crew entries for each race team.

“I appreciate the crew passes and everything IHRA does for us,” Tom Carter said. “But the thing about Edmonton is the fans. I think they are the best fans anywhere. They appreciate us being there and appreciate the show we put on. And you make so many new friends up there. I can’t wait to get to Edmonton and can’t wait to get back in the car.”

The CARS RV & Marine & Motorsport Rocky Mountain Nationals presented by Torco Racing Fuels will begin Friday, July 4 with professional and sportsman qualifying starting at 9:00am. Saturday will feature two Nitro qualifying sessions and IHRA’s legendary Cervus Contractors and JCB Heavy Equipment “Night of Fire.” Final eliminations, part of PartSource Championship Sunday, will be held Sunday, July 6. For more information visit www.nitrojam.com or www.castrolraceway.com.

Mike Janis Racing

Elma, NY –As a "great" American President once said, "There's an ole saying in Tennessee I know it's in Texas probably in Tennessee. That says, "Fool me once shame on… shame on you… fool me, can't get fooled again". I guess that best describes the attitude of Mike Janis Racing heading into the Rocky Mountain Nationals in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Flash back to 2003 when Janis would have earned his second IHRA Pro Modified World Championship had he just attended the Edmonton event. Fast forward to 2007 when it happened again! Had Janis made the nearly 4,500 mile round trip he'd be a four time IHRA Pro Modified World Championship, not a two time champ. With all of that behind the Janis team, they are ready more than ever for this event.

"It's going to be a long ride, but we are excited to race in front of all those great Edmonton fans! They make the whole trip worth the long drive. We're far better off now as far as points go than we were last season and the car is really coming around. Dan Page Race Cars has built us one heck of a car! Our problems this year have had nothing to do with "new car blues" it's just been small things that we think we've sorted out," said crew chief Mike Janis Jr.

Qualifying begins Friday with one afternoon session and one night session. Qualifying resumes Saturday with an the third round at 3 PM local time and the IHRA's World Famous Night of Fire starting at 7:30 Pm local time. Eliminations begin Sunday at 11 AM.

Terry McMillen Preview

EDMONTON, Alb. (June 30, 2008) -- Professional drag racing teams from all across the United States will make their way across western Canada's prairies to arrive this week in Alberta for one of Edmonton's premier events. The Castrol Raceway will open its gates to host the Rocky Mountain Nationals (July 4-6), the fifth stop on the IHRA drag racing series. Many of the teams do so with the unprecedented support of Alberta area businesses, including the defending event champion in Top Fuel, Terry McMillen (Elkhart, Indiana) and the 2006 event champion and two-time defending IHRA World Champion in Nitro Funny Car, Dale Creasy, Jr. (Beecher, Illinois).

Terry McMillen, driver of the Amalie Oil Top Fuel Dragster looks forward to the race affectionally known as "The Rocky's". "Edmonton is a very special place for us," McMillen said. "We earned our first career win here last year and that was great. But what really makes it a special place is the tremendous support we receive from the fans and businesses." McMillen will also bring a second car, the Amalie Oil InstiGator Funny Car piloted by Ontario's Paul Noakes.

Dale Creasy, Jr, driver of the Torco Nitro Funny Car agrees with McMillen. "It's a long trip, but worth every mile we travel once we get here," he said. Creasy earned his first career win in Edmonton, sparking his successful quest towards his first World Championship in 2006.

Behind every successful organization is the support of its partners, which is no different for McMillen and Creasy. Many of those partners see the value of being involved with the teams and the opportunities it provides for their employees and customers alike. Jet Label and Tape, president Darrell Friesen has been involved for several years. "It's a great event, no doubt," Friesen said. "Edmonton has the Indy car event, but we feel like the 'Rocky's' provide a better experience for our employees and clients. The event is several days and we can be right in the middle of the action - right in the pits with the drivers and teams. There's no other form of racing that provides that kind of interaction."

McMillen and Creasy will tour the Jet Label and Tape facility and then participate in the companies second annual golf outing where McMillen's and Creasy's team will play along side Jet Label and Tape executives and clients.

"Dale and I are very proud of our involvement with Darrell and Jet Label," McMillen said. "We'd love to get a win for them this weekend."

The support from area business doesn't end there. Paradise RV & Coach provides support for both McMillen teams with transporters and RVs. "Craig Anstead and all the folks at Paradise RV & Coach are the best in the business," McMillen said. "The customer support and service that they provide is phenomenal. I can't imagine anyone in the U.S. or Canada making a decision about an RV without first calling them."

McMillen's Funny Car team will also carry the multi-year event support of Global Power Systems and Dwight Kennedy's Northern Provincial Pipelines while Creasy enjoys additional support from Harold Parfett of Ace Manufacturing.

The Castrol Raceway is Canada's premier drag racing facility and provides the perfect location for a national event. "All of this would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of Rob and Kim Reeves," McMIllen said. "They've always provided the best for the racers and fans. This year won't be any different. They've added more seats a brand new racing surface and we always get to race in front of sell-out crowds. What more could we ask for?"
