Final qualifying and TA eliminations

 

KENT, Wash. -- Dennis Taylor grabbed his second Top Alcohol Funny Car win in as many years running a 5.567 second, 259.36 mph pass in the final at this weekend's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series 1949 Terminal Velocity event at Pacific Raceways. Taylor knocked off NHRA North West Division point's leader Clint Thompson in his semifinal match-up on his way to the final round against Sean O'Bannon of Ontario, Calif. O'Bannon, in his third final round of the year, suffered mechanical problems in the final round handing the win to Taylor.
In the Top Alcohol Dragster category is was defending NHRA Pacific Division Champion Duane Shields capturing the win and taking home the trophy with a pass of 5.286 seconds at 273.72 mph. The Boulder City, Nev., racer took out No. 1 qualifier Randy Eakins who tripped the clocks in 5.659 seconds at 246.98 mph in his loosing efforts.

The alcohol cars were the only ones in eliminations today as Rob Harrison of N. Vancouver, B.C., held on to the No. 1 qualifying spot in Comp Eliminator with his '05 Cavalier followed by Doug Lambeck of Corona Del Mar, Calif.

Super Stock qualifying remained unchanged from Friday's qualifying with Chatsworth, Calif., racer Jimmy DeFrank holding the top spot in his '08 Cobalt at 8.776 seconds. Washington resident Sean Cour of Brush Prairie remained No. 2 and Seattle's Alan Falcone in third.

Wesley Libby jumped to the top of Stock Eliminator in his '71 Challenger followed by Jeff Lane of North Bend, Wash., in second and DeFrank, pulling double duty, in third. Lane is also driving in two classes this weekend and is qualified fourth in Super Stock.

In Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson R.J. McAnulty is on top out of Billings, Mont., on his '05 Suzuki with Brett Hordemann of Otis Orchard, Wash., in second.

Greg Carlile leads the Top Dragster class with a lap of 6.517 seconds, at 210.11 mph. Carlile, of Lake Stevens, Wash., is followed by Paul Gladden of Tracy, Calif., at 6.606, 201.91 and Bellingham, Wash., racer Quentin Chambers at 6.656, 206.04 in third. The Division's Auto Max USA Top Sportsman class is led by Canadian Terry Spargo running 6.754 seconds at 204.39 mph in his '02 Cavalier. Frank Tamez is second out of Yakima, Wash., in a '07 Mustang and Barry Hobson of Seattle if third.

Speedzone recap

Top Alcohol qualifying was completed Friday night and to the surprise of most on the West Coast, Shawn Cowie failed to qualifying for theis weekend's race. He ran an okay 5.57 in the first session Friday but the final two were both aborted runs.

The A/Fuelers hauled the mail as both Duane Shields and Randy Eakins ran in the 5.20's. Eakins made his first ever 5.20 lap, a great 5.262.

Congratulations to Hugh Ridley Racing and Gary Ormsby for their first Division six qualifying effort. Also a good effort by Bill Edwards for their respectable 5.66

Brian Hough is back in a big way with a solid 5.597/257 in the final qualifier in TAFC. Sean Bellemuer qualified in the Synoil TAFC. He replaced Ken Kraus in the Edmonton based Funny Car team. John Evanchuk was right in the mix with a very strong 5.69.

Saturday, June 21
Gates open - 8 a.m.
Tech - 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Time Trials and Qualifying - 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Comp Eliminator - 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Top Alcohol Eliminations - 3 p.m.

Sunday, June 22
Gates open - 8 a.m.
Eliminations - 9:30 a.m.
